The scope given to us for this project was to minimise/remove the manual handling operations in the setting of a sealed brake unit and also to more accurately measure the torque required to slip the brake, as each brake needed to be set between a specific range. The later being very important to the customer as this determines the effectiveness of the brake unit.
We gained a full understanding of the requirements by having several design meetings with the customer, before the design was signed off and manufacturing begun. SGN fully managed the design, manufacture and programming of the machine, by either completing the work in house using our own Engineers and Technicians or by using one of our approved suppliers the project was delivered on time and within budget.
Once we had trained the customer’s staff on the machine and we had ironed out the initial few teething issues, the customer has said that he is seeing a big reduction in the time taken to set up a complete brake unit, between 20-30% which has had a really positive impact on their production. With the machines torque sensor and PC link they are now able to individually log the brakes final torque setting, which can be engraved on the unit along with a serial number for quality control. Also with the reduced manual handling compared to the process before this machine we have been able to improve and reduce any Health & Safety issues the customer had with the old setting operation before this machine.
